A Pap test, also called a Pap test or cervical cytology, is a screening test used to detect abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that extends into the vagina. The test aims to detect early signs of cervical cancer or precancerous lesions, allowing for rapid intervention and treatment.
Pap tests are generally recommended for women age 21 and older and are repeated every few years, depending on factors such as age, medical history, and results of previous Pap tests. Additionally, a human papillomavirus (HPV) test can be done at the same time as a Pap test because HPV is a common cause of cervical cancer.
